A second grade teacher who now works in the school where she once attended as a child wants to inspire her class and finds that students are engaged in schoolwork with technology.
Natalie Johnson is is a second grade math and science teacher at Beneke Elementary. Her desire to motivate her students has resulted in her discovery that technology is a key tool for success.
“Technology and engagement go hand-in-hand,” she said. “The more I have, the more my students are involved.”
When Johnson first started teaching she was not able to access much technology but that soon changed. She found a nonprofit for teachers, Donors Choose, that allows teachers to connect with donors who can provide needed classroom tools.
“It’s basically a platform that teachers can go on and request classroom materials,” Johnson said. “You can go shop for materials, and different people can go on and donate toward your project. It’s a great way for teachers to get things for the classroom they wouldn’t be able to get on their own.”
She first requested some Samsung tablets, which her students used to play math games. She now uses tablets for other projects as well.
