A love of local log rolling turned into a great interactive National History Day project for one eighth grader.
Livi Pappadopoulos is a Holmen Middle School eighth grader and first place 2015 Lumberjack World Championships log roller. She presented a skit about the history of the lumber industry in Wisconsin. She shared the history of the profession, including the story of famed lumberjack John Nelligan, and the dangers of log jams on the river.
“There is so much more to it than just cutting down trees,” she said. “Lumber is still used to this day and the impact really lives on.”
More than 270 eighth grade students at the middle sschool created exhibits, websites, and skits for National History Day. They spent four months researching topics of their choice, and creating presentations that fit this year’s theme for Language Arts and Social Studies: Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History.
