A group of middle school students has discovered that the power of theater enables them to build relationships and be part of a community. “The missed aspect of theater is the power that it has within it,” says teacher Matthew Belopavlovich.
Belopavlovich comes to Young Middle Magnet School every Thursday for 50 minutes. He is an instructor at the Patel Conservatory at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. His visits are part of the conservatory’s outreach program.
The All Boys Drama Club enables 13 seventh and eighth grade boys to experience the power in their lives of live theater through a writing based program.
“This group is an outlet to discuss issues,” said Belopavlovich. “The boys get opportunities to talk about important topics. Most of the boys weren’t friends and now have formed bonds. One of the main benefits of theater is the family atmosphere.”
