Community groups are discovering that art opens communication for students with autism.

Art Opens Communication for Students With AutismBeing an artist allows Leon High School senior Bailey Houghton an opportunity to experiment with different media and transcend the barriers to communication which often challenge people with autism.

“It’s a way,” Bailey said, “to share my love of the world around me.”

Bailey was named Student of the Month in February by VSA Florida, the statewide organization on arts and disability. Two students from different age groups are chosen for the award. Applications include visual arts, music, dance, drama, writing and leadership.

VSA celebrates artists with disabilities through a registry, performances, and exhibitions serving over 60,000 people annually.

At Leon, students participated in a mural project sponsored by VSA bringing students with disabilities and students from the general education program together. The complete mural will be part of a traveling exhibit.
