A math literacy initiative is raising scores on state tests for grades 3 through 8.
Terri Bucci is a math researcher who finds data that shows academic improvement exciting. She is co-director of the Math Literacy Initiative, where students are guided through math principles through conversation and activities so they can discover math concepts on their own.
“The idea is that mathematics classrooms are not places where a teacher opens up the head of a kid and pours in all this math knowledge,” Bucci said. “A math classroom in Mansfield City Schools that uses these principals of the Math Literacy Initiative is one where everyone in the classroom is a mathematician.”
“That shift in pedagogy from treating kids like receptacles of math to treating them as partners in mathematical thinking and learning helps the kids to own the mathematics and to be part of the mathematical world as opposed to being a voyeur in the world of math,” she said.
