Students are getting the benefit of a nonprofit organization’s ability to help schools, as Donors Choose helps teachers fund classrooms. During a flash funding event, many teachers around the country were thrilled to have their requests for books, furniture, and equipment funded by donors and foundations as part of a #BestSchoolDay national event on DonorsChoose.org.
At Adams Elementary School in Fort Wayne, Julie Porter’s kindergarten class has a new little table with chairs, and a love seat with cushions. They also received a display for picture books so that the 24 children will enjoy beginning to read.
Porter has often funded such purchases herself. This time, her $348 project along with others in Indiana was funded by the Herbert Simon Family Foundation and the Indiana Pacers Foundation.
“I was so excited, I can’t even put it into words. I honestly didn’t really think it would get funded. I was hoping it would, but I don’t have a lot of well-off friends,” said Porter.
