A dual language program benefits Spanish speaking students as well as their English speaking counterparts.
In Casper Wyoming second graders at Park Elementary School participate in dual language immersion programs in Spanish and Mandarin. Many schools in Natrona County offer assistance to students from Spanish speaking families learning English. Now, Spanish speaking students participate with the English speaking students in an immersion program where they are instructed half a day in Spanish, and half in English in Jackson. Casper’s program serves mostly English language students, but that could change.
“This is the first generation of children,” said Park second grade dual language teacher Eren Dira Garcia “We have to understand that in Casper, the Latino population is quite small.”
Most Spanish speaking students are enrolled in schools with English as a second language programs. However their parents are developing awareness of the dual immersion program and showing interest.
