For elementary students studying the Oregon Trail, having high school students build covered wagons for young pioneers adds a touch of realism to the experience.
At Independence Elementary, fourth graders are learning about the Oregon Trail, and designing their own covered wagons. Students from Central High have been building the wagons in partnership with the children.
“Each kid had to design the wagon they wanted to build,” said woodshop teacher Lynn Thomas. “The high school kids helped draw and measure, and are building kits for them.”
Students will ride their finished wagons around downtown Independence if assembly goes well. For the high school students, the idea that younger children would assemble the kits was a great responsibility.
