Members of the Blues in Schools Project are bringing the blues to a new generation.
In Ozark Alabama, the cofounder of the Alabama Blues Project Debbie Bond brought her band to perform for local students. During the hour long session, she and other members of the Blues in Schools Project demonstrated classic blues instruments and spoke of the history of blues and its roots in the Wiregrass and local musicians.
“This gives students a chance to see a style of music that they don’t often get to see,” Ozark City Schools Superintendent Rick McInturf said.
Bond enjoyed bringing music to students at Mixon Elementary, which does not have a formal music program.
“They are completely wide open,” Bond said about Mixon students. “They are very receptive. With older students you have more peer pressure.”
