What started as an economics activity for a fourth grade class has turned into an all out effort of kids helping troops with a Pet Rock project.
At South Knoll Elementary, fourth graders had been instructed to decorate a pet rock, and then develop a marketing plan and commercial to sell them. The students decided to use the proceeds to send seven care packages to troops in Afghanistan. One of the soldiers is the son of bilingual reading specialist Maria Saenz. Her son David has been deployed since August.
Saenz says that they children’s generosity touched her, especially on the weekend.
Two of the troops came to thank the students in person. They presented the class with a certificate and a flag.
