A real world experience is what is in store for students who are finding out that Sundae School is a cool way to learn in summer.

The question that students in the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District’s futurePREP’d Sundae School program in Holland Michigan were to answer was “How can our team invent a frozen treat that all visitors want to try?” They were speaking with customers, trying different marketing techniques, and of course, tasting the different topping mixtures. Once the students had created a new ice cream sundae, they had to find new ways to market it.
13 teams from 10 area school districts were formed. They worked at area businesses and experimented with the toppings.They solicited feedback from their customers, and created an “empathy map” to understand the customer’s perspective.
After Sundae School, the groups came together for a taste sampler event, where they received feedback and evaluated their experiences. Some of the bonuses, in addition to enjoying ice cream, were that they worked together in a group and learned how to make decisions together, narrowing down ideas.
