Struggles with math are not as difficult as they once were, because a pilot math camp prepares kids for sixth grade math and ensures they are ready to learn.
At the Antonio E. Garcia Arts and Education Center, the free pilot math program was created through a partnership between Education is Our Freedom, Corpus Christi ISD, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and C Math Is Easy, and the arts center.
C Math is Easy instructor Andrea Johnson joined with Elsa Brown three years ago to help people who struggled with math. At first they focused on helping college students, but then began tutoring children. At that point they were contacted by County Commissioner Joe A. Gonzalez, founder of Education is Our Freedom. He wanted to reach younger students.
“I thought we needed to be more proactive. Start from the bottom and catch them early,” Gonzalez said.
According to Johnson, making math fun is the key to success. Children learn concepts in a way that is easy to understand and the children apply those concepts in games.
“We allow (the children) to have a voice and make it a safe place to ask questions,” she said. “It’s OK to be wrong and learn from it.”
