Single gender public schools are gaining ground in Dallas. The district is creating more options for parents in schools that are flagged for improvement.
Kevin Malonson, the single gender education coordinator for a new all male public middle school is working with principal Dawn Walker to prepare for the school’s opening on Monday. They want at least 100 men to be there on the first day of school to great the new “gladiators.”
“We’re targeting men,” said Malonson, “but we want anybody who’s willing to come out and celebrate this transformation.”
The Young Men’s Leadership Academy at Fred Florence Middle School was once a coed neighborhood school. Now it is a 1200 student open enrollment all male public school.
The academy accepts any student who lives within the area of nine feeder schools. Unlike magnet schools, the area is limited to those schools, and enrollment is open to all male students.
The boys are not the only ones with the option of a single sex education. Close by the Balch Springs Middle School will open as the Young Women’s STEAM Academy, an all girls school focusing on science, technology, engineering, and math, as well as art and design.
In addition, a new K-8 all girls STEAM academy, Solar Preparatory School for Girls at James B. Bonham joins the five single gender schools in the Dallas ISD, which include the 5 year old Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy and the Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, which opened in 2004.
