As the summer vacation ends, here are some facts and figures as kids head back to school.
In the United States, the Department of Education reports that approximately 50 million students will attend public elementary and secondary schools this year. 3.1 million teachers will teach students ranging from pre-kindergarten through high school. The average student teacher ratio is about 16 students to one teacher. Approximately 249,000 of those teachers are new this year.
Charter schools continue to grow, as enrollment increased from 800,000 in 2003 to 2.5 million ten years later in 2013. 6,4000 charter schools are now in 40 states and the District of Columbia.
On average, $11,670 is spent in the U.S. per pupil in public school.
Private schools have experienced a slight decrease in enrollment since last year. Approximately 4.8 million students are attending private schools this year.
