A language arts class got downright spooky when they produced a haunted podcast about historic and allegedly haunted locations in their area.
Students at Bettendorf Middle School in Iowa researched and explored locations in the Quad-Cities area but instead of writing a report, the recorded, edited, and produced podcasts about the five predetermined sites.
Seventh grade teacher Nikki Armstrong and instructional coach Aaron Maurer selected the best clip from each location, and published an online 18 minute episode.
“Kids are fascinated with scary stories around Halloween, so instead of fighting that, I wanted to do something educationally focused that embraced that fascination,” Armstrong said.
Armstrong made it clear that the assignment was not to frighten the students. “I had to be careful with that, but that’s not what we’re doing,” she said. “They’re learning about historical Quad-City locations through a lens they actually like.” All of the locations are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
