Middle school fundraising underwent a change this year by having students raise money while performing community service.
At Ontario Middle School in Oregon , the whole school went into the community with teachers to offer community service to the public. 347 seventh and eighth graders raised money beforehand through pledges, hoping to reach a goal of $5,100 to fund field trips, fun activities during school time, or major needs that the student body found important to fund.
“I hope the students are instilled with wanting to be part of the community,” said teacher Sherri Gheen, the event organizer and adviser to the student council.
What did they do? They raked leaves for some people, cleaned up city parks, read to younger students, sang to the elderly at a nursing home, and helped wash fire trucks at the Ontario Fire Department.
“The students, as a whole, have been excited about doing this as a large group,” said Lisa Longoria, middle school principal.
