Rochester Public Schools staff and volunteers have been working for five years at bringing students back after they drop out. They knocked on the doors of students, and tell them “We want you back.”
This year their approach is different. They are telling students who are still in school “We want you to stay.”
The proactive approach is dedicated to retaining students. It is individualized, and students are partnered with a mentor to guide them on the right track and not lose them in the first place.
“We took this one day and thought, what if we do this all the time,” said Julie Ruzek, the district’s facilitator of family and community engagement. “We’re checking in regularly with kids to see where they’re at because sometimes they’re not ready on the Saturday we go out to their house.”
