An all day creative writing marathon encourages creativity and teamwork as students share work with peers, writing poems, stories, essays, and telling stories. The National Council of Teachers of English sponsor an annual exercise in marathon writing, which was spearheaded at Lawn School in Jamestown by teacher Brittany Richer.
Jamestown participated in the national activity for the first time this year. Richer had learned about it while she attended Rhode Island College.
“I wanted to bring that spirit and love for writing to the students,” she said.
Creative writing is not a major emphasis in the curriculum at Lawn School, so Richer thought the initiative would encourage students to “play with words.” Principal Nate Edmunds was also supportive of the idea.
There was collaboration between the language teachers in developing the schedules and prompts as classes visited various stations in the building. Each station had sentence starters and topics for essays and stories. Sharing was voluntary, and some students were shy, but soon confidence was building.
