Kids are creating and coding in their new Innovation Lab at Flatirons Elementary School in Boulder.  In the lab, low tech and high tech options are mixed, and students use everything from yarn and cardboard to iPad Pros and robotic Cubelets for creating and inventing.

Kids are Creating and Coding in Their New Innovation LabIn addition to the supplies, there is a corner which functions as a green room for video production.  Messy projects have a sink, and there is a tremendous variety of supplies. The smaller supplies are mobile, stored in bins on wheeled shelves.  These can travel to classrooms.  The tables are on wheels as well, which allows teachers to change the arrangement of the lab.

“We want to connect with kids,” said Katie Gallagher, who teaches a combined first-and-second grade class at Flatirons. “We want them to build and create. We want to bring the curriculum to life, to get kids to work together more and problem solve. We want them to learn from one another.”
