Having two magnet schools add STEAM to their curriculum focus and adding a lab school which will help teachers stay in the profession are just a few of the changes coming to Ector County Independent School District.
Two magnet schools requested the change in curriculum to add a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) focus. Hays Magnet Academy and year round leadership magnet elementary school Gale Pond Alamo want to incorporate STEAM. In addition, a lab school will be added to cultivate teachers’ professional development and possibly expand the International Baccalaureate program to younger students.
“I think it’s kind of a perfect time to do those as we move forward with the progress we’re making,” said Superintendent Tom Crowe.
Crowe says that while the focus of the two magnet schools is academics and leadership, adding STEAM changes the focus of the curriculum. “It doesn’t mean they’re doing away with leadership, it just means most of their focus is going to be on the STEAM with the leadership component,” Crowe said.
