Middle school students are learning to love many languages, as they start out with the opportunity to sample several of them before taking one for all of seventh and eighth grades.

Middle School Students are Learning to Love Many LanguagesThe State College Area School District’s middle school world languages program allows students to try a sampling of world language in 12 week units, and then choose which one they want to study.

“I am so glad that our middle school program includes the rotation of languages,” said Park Forest Spanish teacher Kelly Corman. “The students really seem to respond and have a difficult time ultimately choosing which language. I tell them to choose the one that ‘tugs at their heart.’ ”

Languages in the district include Spanish, German, and French.  Chinese and Arabic are offered at the high school level.

The middle school curriculum focuses not only on language, but on culture and customs as well.
