Teachers are finding a gold mine of statistics sources by using U.S. Census Data for lessons.
The U.S. Census Bureau has some new ideas for teachers in their Statistics in Schools program. Top teachers have created new lesson plans using the Census Bureau’s population data, and they are available for free at the Census Bureau website.
Charleston County School of the Arts math teacher Kathleen Traylor was eager to write some lesson plans for the website. She knows after 20 years teaching experience, that some educators struggle when interpreting statistics.
“So many jobs need it,” Traylor said. “It’s in the standards, but it’s just that sometimes it’s the end of the year and the teacher doesn’t necessarily get to it or the teacher doesn’t have the depth of understanding to teach it beyond mean, median and mode.”
