Best Buddies International is an international association which pairs special needs students one on one with students in the general population. There are chapters in high schools across the United States and the rest of the world.
At Winnacunnet High School, Micah Addison and Meaghan Cooper have found some common interests since they were paired through their Best Buddies chapter. They love to bowl, listen to music, and watch “Star Wars.”
Addison is developmentally challenged and has borderline cerebral palsy. His confidence has improved since meeting Cooper and he has found more friends. The group helps people with special needs connect with others whom they might not meet otherwise.
At least twice a month, the pairs hang out, which makes for a stronger connection between special education students and the rest of the student body.
“Meaghan and I are king and queen,” said Addison, 19, who graduated last year. “We decided that.”
