Students are finding that math can be fun, as long as students know that making mistakes is ok, and follow good habits of mind.
At Hartnell College, a two week Math Academy boot camp has been offered since 2011. Coordinator Laura Fatuzzo is a physics instructor who stresses that students accept mistakes and have a sense of humor.
“It’s one of the habits of mind,” she said. “This year, they’re focusing on two habits: persistence and transferring of knowledge.” The Habits of Mind include applying past knowledge to new problems, persistence, questioning, striving for accuracy, gathering data through all senses, and of course, humor.
“The goal is to create a community of learners, not just in individual classes but life-long learners, inside Hartnell and outside of Hartnell,” Fatuzzo said.
Students participate in Math Academy classes from 9 am to 1 pm, along with two hours of lab time. Approximately 200 students participate in the program. Classes are fun and interactive, but challenging.
