Project based learning is expanding curriculum at one middle school, where students actually want to work on projects over the weekend.
Just before Christmas break, the sixth grade classes at Fremont Middle School were ready for a parent night, with handmade dinosaur sculptures and presentation boards.
Christy Palermo, a history teacher, says that the projects are the result of the school’s new embrace of project based learning, which allows teachers to work together to allow students to take a deeper look at one topic across the curriculum.
During the fall, sixth graders learned about dinosaurs throughout each core class and some electives.
“Our science teacher did a project with elements, and during the dinosaur PBL, he talked about carbon dating,” Palermo said. “Our literature teacher did a lot of reading, she did poetry with dinosaurs, things like that. It’s a schoolwide effort.”
