In response to the need to recruit qualified teachers and help them know what they are doing, a local licensing program teaches the teachers who have expertise in a content area but lack an education degree.
Since 2008, Guilford County Schools have provided a year long teacher licensure training program for teachers who do not have an education background. The program is unique in North Carolina.
“The whole focus is taking people that are not trained to be educators and making them excellent educators,” said teacher Lisa Sonricker.
The teachers must complete required teacher training courses within three years, and pass certain tests by the second year of teaching. Those classes and tests are usually offered at colleges and universities.
Unlike college level programs, the Guilford County Schools need their teachers to know practical skills immediately. With their own program, they can train those teachers to meet their needs.
