Language arts teachers are determined to show their students that reading is a superpower.

Reading is a SuperpowerAt Carpenters Middle School, teachers are fighting apathy about reading like it is kryptonite to Superman.  So, they are calling in the superheroes.  Batman, Wonder Woman, and other superheroes are making appearances at school!

Recently, teachers wore their costumes while leading students to rewrite a story from a different point of view.  Students wore superhero costumes as well.

The students are not reading comic books, but are relating them to other books they read.  For example, Misty Perry was dressed as Harley Quinn, the Joker’s girlfriend.  She asked students to compare her character to the Grinch in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

“She’s a bad girl, but then she turns a little bit good,” said Perry.

“We know from research you have to read at least 20 minutes a day,” said CMS literacy coach Terri Bradshaw. “We teach students how to steal minutes to read.”
