A course in career exploration is to be required for eighth graders if a law that was passed by the Indiana Senate is passed by the House.

Career Exploration is to be Required for Eighth Graders“We will make as part of all eighth-grade curriculum a program called Indiana Career Explorer,” said Sen. Doug Eckerty, R-Yorktown, co-author of the bill.

According to Eckerty, Senate Bill 198 will be a solution for filling up to a million jobs that are expected to open up in the state in the coming 10 years.
Using data from the Department of Workforce Development (DWD), the education system will be able to match skills and plan for curriculum.

“In the past we have used data from too many sources, which has led us to shoot at too many targets and caused us not to be very effective with our workforce training,” said Eckerty.
