In Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the Hattiesburg School District enables teachers to decide what technology they want to learn, how to learn it, and the time to learn it.
Through self paced modules online, teachers can obtain basic technology training from the district. They can register for workshops, schedule private coaching sessions, and request custom training through online scheduling.
According to Instructional Technologist Will Deyamport, the system streamlines professional development time and encourages teacher engagement.
“By having them go through the modules on their own time, when we get together we can really get into how technology can transform the learning experience of students—instead of spending 20 minutes on how to add a user,” Deyamport says.
Hattiesburg is encouraging personalized professional development, allowing teachers to use technology to personalize learning for themselves and their students.
