Many high schools teach financial literacy, but for the past nine years a financial literacy challenge has be held at Chicopee Comprehensive High School, educating 11th graders for a full day on real life finances.

Soft SkillsStudents learn about making a budget for the household, paying a mortgage, grocery bills, and the cost of day care at the Financial Literacy Day Challenge.

According to school administrator Kara Blanchard, the real life preparation is a preparation she wishes her own generation had.

“What it’s going to take when they’re out on their own, how far their money will go, how far their education will go, how far their credit score is going to take them,” Blanchard said.

Financial Literacy Day is an annual exercise, but the real life lessons will be invaluable to young people in the future.
