A middle school student help desk is keeping school computers operating smoothly while giving practical experience in fixing Chromebooks.
At Queensbury Middle School, students are being allowed to take Chromebooks home daily this year. Last year, they did not leave the school. Now that the 2100 computers travel, administrators created the Student Help Desk to handle the issues that come up. A small group of students have been selected and trained to fix the Chromebooks at the middle school.
Systems engineer Bernard Capron is “the adult in the room,” who selects the students for the responsibility. He values hard work and reliability over technological skill.
“We really want kids who are going to show up on a daily basis,” said Capron.
Capron says that he could not handle the workload alone. The Help Desk deals with dead batteries, broken screens, and sticky trick pads.
“Honestly, without the kids, there’s no way,” Capron said. “I’m more of a supervisor. The repairs are really done by the kids.”
