The real life connection between careers and math skills is being demonstrated by a teacher who invites local professionals and businesspeople to speak with her students about how they use math in their lives.
At Somerset School in North Plainfield, New Jersey, sixth grade teacher Elisa Salvemini wants her students to understand how important math is to everyday living. The first guest she brought to get classroom was her mother, Johanna Salvemini, owner of Johanna’s Creations Custom Framing.
Mrs. Salvemini led the students in measuring and cutting moulding, making a custom frame for class artwork created earlier. They had to use rulers and protractors to measure the length and angle, andv then fit the pieces of moulding together.
“My classes had a lot of fun”, said Ms. Salvemini. “Once they selected their border material, they were excited to see how the frame would come together.”
