At the Summer Science Academy in Abilene, the three laws of motion rule summer camp.
1. The Law of Inertia
2. Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass
3. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Each week, a different age group gathered at Eisenhower Elementary School and participated in activities which demonstrated Sir Isaac Newton’s laws of motion.
According to director Dan Brown, the camp is now in its second year. Approximately 150 students are signed up. He started the program in response to a need for more science education.
“I felt our district has really worked hard focusing on math and reading throughout the school year — really super diligently, adding extra time for those subjects — and science and social studies weren’t getting the full attention they used to,” he said. “And besides, kids just love science and we wanted them to have that opportunity.”
