The California Weekly Explorer’s interactive “Walk Through California” is an opportunity for elementary students to time travel through living history.
“Ready positions…heads down, eyes closed. Time travel is about to begin.”
The robotic voice began the countdown, and students prepared to leap into the past. Funded by the PTA, California Weekly Explorer’s “Walk Through California” is an annual event at El Morro Elementary School.
“It’s amazing,” says student Marlie Barron. “We get to learn history and have fun.”
All the fourth grade classes at El Morro participate in the adventure, which is scheduled a year in advance due to the statewide popularity of the program.
The children have personal encounters with Native Americans, explorers, Spanish missionaries and Russian fur traders, traveling through time. The roles are played by fourth graders, spontaneously selected by the presenter and given a simple costume.
Humor is an important part of the success of the experience. Students remember funny moments, and carry forward fun memories.
