In Tennessee high schools, there is a slight increase in the number of girl football players.
Currently there are 19 girls playing football in the state of Tennessee. Most are kickers. Savannah Blackwell is an offensive lineman for the Eagles in Shelbyville.
“I don’t really think about it,” said Blackwell. “I just go out there and do what I’m supposed to do.
“I don’t think of this as such a small group of people. I just do my job and do what I like.”
Acc0rding t0 c0ach Justin Palmer, Blackwell is on the Eagles’ offensive line second team. She is not the first girl to play for the team.
“It doesn’t bother the guys because they are used to it,” Palmer said. “If we’re doing a drill with the offensive line and a player collides with her, they help each other up and he pats her helmet.
“He doesn’t pat her on the butt. They just go on to the next play.”
The TSSAA reports that 19 girls have been submitted as players on their school football teams. At least one has decided to leave the team. The 19 players are a slight increase from 15 in 2016 and 14 in 2015.
