Kids are checking out ukuleles from the school library, along with books. At Summit Lakes Middle School, library media specialist Christie Brown has found that checking out non traditional items increases the level of student interest in the library.
“We have a ukulele club that started a few years ago,” said Brown. “… Around the time it started, I ran across this article about a school that was checking out ukuleles, specifically. Since we have this ukulele club, I thought it was interesting.”
Currently the library has five ukuleles which can be checked out by students and staff. The instruments are popular especially among student trying them out for the first time.
“A lot of them are curious and they’re just intrigued,” she said. “Some also have friends in the club.”
The instruments were donated by KALA Brand Music Company to the ukulele clubs at Summit Lakes Middle School as well as Lee’s Summit West High School. Each instrument comes with a case, which was donated by Legacy Music of Lee’s Summit.
