At Pioneer High School and Carson Online, high school students benefit from being mentored by staff members as part of the student support network. For three years, students have had the possibility of receiving extra support. The result is that staff members get to know students individual, and monitor attendance and grades.

The most important aspect of the program is the focus on building positive relationships between students and staff.

Last year, students completed a survey which showed that the Staff Mentoring Students program has a positive effect. On the the Nevada School Climate/Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) survey students reported high indicators for physical safety, relationship, emotional safety, and cultural and linguistic competencies. They reported that they “felt safe, secure, and that someone cared about them.”

There is also after school tutoring in math and English. The tutoring program is designed to show that all students can master these subjects if they apply effort and are given extra time and needed support. Sessions are free, providing one on one help with homework in math and other subjects.
