Encouraging students to learn activities they will enjoy for a long time means that lifetime activities offer choices in Phys Ed classes.

You won’t see a gym class offered in schools in upstate Victor, New York.



Instead, the students participate in activities they are likely to enjoy for a lifetime, such as mountain biking, archery, rock climbing, kayaking, self-defense, and in-line skating.

“We want our kids as they walk out of these halls in grade 12 to be active for life,” said Ron Whitcomb, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics.

Schools are focused on preparing students for jobs and college, but there is also a focus for physical education teachers to look beyond graduation to the skills students will need for a lifetime of fitness. Even the least competitive students are encouraged to keep moving, while enjoying a sport or skill.

“The most important job of a great physical education teacher is to appreciate every student in that class, not just the highly skilled,” said Whitcomb.
