Hi, I’m Pat Wyman and I’d like to share a very personal story with you…

Meet My Daughter, Erin, and Read Her Story About Reading Struggles and How We Solved Them
Erin announced to me at age five that she wanted to be a doctor. But early on, in the first grade, something was getting in the way of her dream.
She asked me to teach her to read at age four, and I reluctantly did – (I actually believe this is a bit too young, but that is another story for another day).
While Erin went into the first grade reading, by about mid-year, she was really struggling. Her good reading skills STOPPED!
When her teacher called me in mid-year and said she wanted Erin to repeat the first grade, I was more than stunned!
As a learning expert and reading specialist, the feeling in the pit of my stomach was unimaginable! I knew Erin wanted to read, and learn and yet suddenly, she was struggling, and it broke my heart.
Since her teacher could not really say why Erin was struggling in reading, and only that she wanted her to do more of what was causing her problems a second time, my experience told me that Erin did not need tutoring in reading or any other subject.
In fact, in her case, just like so many other kids, tutoring in reading would have been a huge waste of time and money, plus never solve her real problem.
Once I gave Erin the right assessment, and asked her just the right questions, it turns out that Erin did not perceive what was on the printed page the way she needed to in order to be a great reader. This is what was was getting in the way of her reading, and her comprehension.
She was skipping lines, not seeing punctuation, and only seeing parts of words. When she read aloud, she did not see the punctuation half the time. She told me she had to read things 3 or 4 times to even remember “some” of it. Imagine how hard she was working – it was exhausting her and she was only 6.
Erin’s reading problem only showed up as the reading got harder than when she first started school. It was only when she had to read more books with longer passages, that her problem showed up.
Her whole visual system was completely stressed, and even I did not know it at the time until the teacher called me in for that meeting. It was not until that painful wake up call came – that I knew we had to ask better questions.
Here’s what I know for sure.
Asking a child who is struggling in any area, to simply repeat a grade, doing the same activities over again, will only make the problem worse unless you resolve the underlying problems in the first place.
You have to identify and fix the underlying cause. More reading, without understanding what is really causing the problem initially is like the old saying, ‘doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result’.
Erin did not need glasses. We ruled that out quickly. But, after listening carefully to her read aloud, noticing where she struggled in particular, and asking her precisely how she felt as she read, I had the answer.
I knew that just a few weeks of customized exercises to strengthen her visual and perceptual skills would make Erin an excellent reader for the rest of her life!
And, it did. Thankfully, she pursued and achieved her life-long dream of becoming a doctor. Today, Erin is a Neonatologist, a doctor who treats and helps save the lives of premature and sick infants.
But imagine this – what if I thought that reading tutoring in something like phonics or comprehension would help?
What if I assumed that her teacher’s advice to repeat the first grade would actually make a difference?
Tutoring would never had addressed the real truth about the underlying cause of her reading struggles because it would have been like adding the roof, before building the reading foundation.

NOTE TO PARENTS !
When your child struggles to learn, many well-meaning people will tell you the problem exists but NOT THE ACTUAL ROOT cause for the learning problem. This is why parents are so frustrated that nothing seems to work as they desperately try to help.
Schools tend to tell kids what to learn, but never show them “how to learn”. They also don’t assess whether your child is ready for learning.
For example, did you know that the eye chart test kids receive in school only tells you that your child can see a certain size letter from 20 feet away? It has nothing to do with reading – yet this is still the benchmark in most schools.
Knowing your child is below grade level in anything is meaningless unless…
It does not tell you the root cause of why that is the case nor does having your child practice more of what they are untrained in already.

You have to ask yourself – do you honestly know what is going on inside your child’s mind when he or she is trying to read, write, remember,or take a test?

a) “Your child is not reading at grade level.”
Standardized tests never tell you “how” your child perceives what they read or how the letters look to them on a printed page. They also don’t tell you why your child has to re-read things 10 times in order to remember and understand them.
(WHEN SOMEONE TELLS YOU your child is not reading a grade level, YOU HAVE NO INFORMATION AS TO WHY OR WHAT TO DO – you have to know how things on the page look to your child, how they feel when they read and until you use the Brain Advantage Learning Assessment and Solutions Blueprint you have no idea why it takes your child longer to comprehend and why they have to re-read things 10 times to “understand them.”
b) “Your child has low reading comprehension.”
(AGAIN – YOUR BIGGEST QUESTION has to be WHY THIS IS TRUE – NOT THAT IT EXISTS.)
The typical reasons such de-coding problems, phonics issues, and words like your child is smart but not living up to potential won’t ever help solve the problem.)
WHEN KIDS DON’T COMPREHEND THEIR READING, YOU DON’T HAVE THEM PRACTICE BY READING MORE AND READING LONGER IN ORDER TO IMPROVE COMPREHENSION.
This is like a doctor telling a person with an injured knee to run on it more, right after the injury, so it will heal.
If you know what your child actually does in their mind when they try and comprehend like you will in the Brain Advantage Learning Assessment, then you will actually solve reading comprehension issues by training the things that create excellent reading comprehension and remove any roadblocks in their way to better understanding of what they read.
c) “Your child won’t sit still, can’t remember homework assignments, forgets to turn things in on time, they are sloppy when working in class, and can’t remember instructions. Maybe your child has ADHD.”
I can’t say enough about this one. If a child is a good “seat-sitter” does that make your child a good student?
According to medical doctors like Stephen Guffanti, M.D. and Frank Barnhill, M.D. who have written many books about the more than 60 things that look like ADHD but aren’t really ADHD, if you don’t really know “why” your child forgets or can’t recall instructions, then you will want to find out before, as Dr. Guffanti says, ‘drugging your child for not being a good seat sitter and forgetting homework at school’.

Here are some other examples of hidden learning struggles:
Typical standardized tests will never tell you how your child thinks when he or she writes, in what order those thoughts occur, why or whether your child can get the words out onto paper that are in his or her mind.
Essay writing is actually easy to solve because, like all other subjects – there is a formula that great students follow. We teach that formula in the free bonus items too, but more importantly, we’ll tell you why the roadblock is there in the first place and then how to resolve it.
d) “Your child’s math skills are below grade level.”
Here’s the skinny on math. If your child is excellent in math then he or she has strong figural and symbolic abilities, good inferential memory and strong notational processes.
